Instructional Planning Activity Types Chart

Make sure you have read the article for this week by Harris and Hofer! For this assignment you will think about an activity that you do in your class and consider some technologies that may support that activity in a different way based on your TPACK understanding. Some examples are provided below in different styles, you can decide how you will enter your contribution to the knowledge being constructed in the chart!

Click on the EDIT THIS PAGE to get started...remember to click SAVE when you are finished! Revist this page to see what others have contributed!
If all the rows have been used, click in the last row and then click on the table icon (newtableicon.jpg). Then, choose Row, Add Row, Add below to add another row for your entry.

Brief Description
Possible Technologies
Cheryl Ward
Listen to Audio
Students listen to recordings of speeches, music, radio broadcasts, oral histories, and lectures; digital or non-digital
Podcasts (“Great Speeches in History,” etc.), Audacity, Garageband, Odeo, Evoca, Podcast People
Teacher
Peer Feedback
In my class students give each other peer feedback on a writing project, but it would be great to do this electronically.
I may consider a wiki where they would post their writing and then others could comment sort of non private? Could use Google Docs and peers could comment using the comment option and it would be more private.
Annette Marino/Stanton Middle School
Math Game
Students would create a math review game on a particular unit including math concepts and vocabulary
Students could use smart powerpoint templates, puzzlemaker to design their game, as well as, Google Docs and/or Wiki to communicate with their group members sharing ideas and editing their work
Tina Norris/Coventry
View Presentation
Parents (my audience) view a presentation designed to educate them about the set up of the school, procedures and the type of experience they can expect for thier child in an orientation style gathering.
iMovie, Voice Thread to incorporate student perspectives, Power Point, Digital Imaging

Investigation of angles and parallel lines
Students use a Geometers's Sketchpad to draw parallel lines. They continue the activity be constructiong a tranversal through the parallel lines. Students then use a protractor to measure the angles formed. Students use a wiki to list the pairs of angles by the special names of angle relationships which they learned earlier. Students analyze their findings to make conjectures about how angle relationships and angle measures are connected when two parallel lines are cut by a transversal.
Students use Geometer's sketchpad, a class wiki for recording their findings, and voice thread to make their conjectures about angle relationships and measures

As the walls of our new middle school continue to grow with each brick and block, the parents, students and staff curiosity also grows. Since I cannot give each of them hardhat tours, I can bring the tour to them with technology. Through the use of a flip camera, and audacity, I will be bringing the growth to them. Monthly walk throughs with the contractors and the use of my flip camera, will allow me to show the development of the new building.

develop a knowledge web
I use Inspiration (can also be done in Word, but it is more difficult) to create idea webs. Using the Internet for sources of information, students gather and organize information based on subtopics for future use.

Blog
I like to get my students thinking about fun/interesting topics outside of the classroom curriculum, however the questions are usually related to the information we are discussing. One question I posted questioned whether graffiti is art. Students then posted their responses and could view each others.

large group conversation and discussion
From an administrator's position I think that there is a lot of information and thoughts that are not heard during meetings. After speaking with our technology coach one idea that came up was using a "backchannel" to keep a running discussion of thoughts and ideas concerning what is being talked about in these meetings that we could look at later tp see what the people in those meetings are thinking or suggesting.

Blog/On-line Journaling
We are currently waiting for set of classroom laptops to show up as part of our grant. Once these show up I will be setting up a classroom wiki-page. Each week I will be having the students log in and answer something related to that weeks lesson. Anther day during the week they will be able to go in and reply to other class mebers responses.

Documentation of the 2012 Election
After talking about the election with students in the classroom, it has been neat to see how their ideas about events and people change. So what I would like to do leading up to the 2012 election (once we get our classroom notebooks) is to create a wiki in which students can participate in a "current event" in which we will look at politics and see how that effects our possible voting habits and ideas on certain candidates as they move throuh the election cycle. I feel this would have students actively particpating in government and at the same time using information that they have learned and putting it to use in real life situations.
wiki/and also possibly a voice thread.

discussion/question and answer session
Many times during classroom discussion or when asking questions in class, the same few students raise their hands. When calling on students without their hands raised it can be difficult to get participation or a complete answer. By using a blog, google docs or a wiki, more students could contribute to the lesson and over a longer period of time. It would be nice to see more students interact with each lesson. Clickers can also be used to determine how well students are grasping an idea. The clickers allow for students that normally will not contribute to participate.
Clickers, blog, google doc and/or wiki

Organize your papers in a science binder
In our science class the students keep a binder with all of their homework, classwork, and test/quizzes. There is also a section for notes, and vocabulary. This binder helps the students to study and collect a record to reflect upon of the diverse range of activities they completed to learn various concepts. This record could be kept electronicly in the form of an e-portfolio. A long term goal of our technology team is to move toward an e-portfolio. I would have my students use powerpoint because that's what I have experience with, but other teachers may decide to use another form for their students' e-portfolio. Unless each student had daily access to a computer I don't think I could go paperless. So I would have my students work on an e-portfolio and a traditional binder. The e-portfolio would focus on the Ohio Academic Content Standards. Each student should scan or link an electronic proof that they have mastered each grade level indicator. For today's students the possibility that they will electronicly save and look back on this in the future, I feel, is much higher than it is for them to save and look back on a binder full of papers.
(program to create e-portfolio) Microsoft Office software, (hardwares and softwares to create digital documentation of mastery) scanners, flip video, digital camera, digital voice recording, word processing and presentation builders, Woordle, screen capture of searches or blogs etc.

Group Literary Analysis Project
Assign specific readings and have students develop a wiki of possible literary analysis themes working towards a single group produced theme
wikis, possibly voice threads and google.docs

Group discussion on new indicator
Group would take turns writing what they new about the indicator(If anything) Then wrote a problem using the indicator..then solved each problem.
Could now try a voice thread or Wikis. It will be fun trying this.

Group/Individual Read for Comprehension : Participatory Divergent
Activity Types...yes?
Students will listen to The Pearl, while following the text, and then answer comprehension questions in an organizer format. Other days, students will read orally and or in literature circles...discussion about method of reading will follow....what works best for individual students.
Use of an MP3 player per individual....and then, hopefully, evoke responses to the Pearl through a Voice Thread response.(However, currently we are unable to get into Voice Thread at School, but we are working at it.)
Tim Murray/Fostoria
Texting
I would like to see how teachers could utilize the text lingo and turn that into quality writing. This is tied to Ruby Payne's research in the fact that we take their particular use of language and try to build on that to make sure that it is considered acceptable in the work force.

Chaney
Video presentation
I would use a video presentation help made by the students at Chaney that would be presented to the parents and new students explaining, and describing what Chaney is all about. The presentation can also be shown to the community to gain support for the school and the students community projects.
This will be through audacity, voice threads, power points, and podcasts, and community commercials on our local stations.

Feedback after large group discussions or events.
I would design a wiki to get feedback from staff, students and parents after large meetings or workshops. Or general feedback on events that were organized by the school.
I believe the wikki would be a great
communicating device for suggestions or concerns after meetings or events.
Rachel Robinette
Crenshaw
Group discussion (science concept)
Students would be able to respond to a comprehension question or statement that I have posted, on a science topic.
wiki would be great, voicethread would also work wonderfully as a way to respond to the topic and each other's opinions about the topic
Matt Lawson
Science Lab Demonstration
Students will build a model of a plant and/or animal cell. The lab will be recorded with discussion by the student about the function of each organelle. Students will carry on a threaded discussion about analogies that correspond with the function of each organelle.
Podcast, viewed on iPod, and Blackboard for the threaded discussion

Orientation
After using VoiceThread that kind of gave me an idea of something to do for the beginning of next year. I would like to take a group of students and have them set up a presentation for the incoming 6th graders that tells them all about our school and all the programs that we have to offer.
VoiceThread or Podcast

Create an Illustrated Map
After our discussion over Napoleon's Campaigns, students will use Google Maps and Powerpoint to create maps detailing the advances, battles and retreats, as well as the resources that were there prior to and after the Russian retreat. In addition, sound clips and voice description will be added as the battles progress. (Video Podcast, perhaps as an alternative)
Google Maps, PowerPoint, Voice Podcast, Recorder.
Create a presentation regarding safety procedures for our crisis management plan. By using voice thread I would like to create a presentation that outlines safety procedures for staff and students during various types safety drills. In addition to the procedures, the expectations would be shared and I would ask the
local fire chief and school safety officer join me in addressing the staff and students. Then the presentation would shown during homeroom or another selected time for the students to view. It could be used at different times throughout the year to reinforce our expectations. Voice thread/podcasts

Quatrice James
Math
Students will create their own game (math problems) to demonstrate understanding. Students can create questions for one another to answer.
Students can use Wiki to communicate questions and answers. Voice Thread can also be used to explain their games or findings.

Dennis Harden/Groveport Audio/video presentation I would like to create a presentation / voice thread
Middle School South to share with staff & students outlining /podcasts
and explaining procedures and expectatiofor
various safety procedures emergency drills.
I would invite the local fire chielf and school
safety officer to speak as well and then this
could be shown during homeroom and at other
to reinforce and remind students & staff
of the procedures.
